the belt turns the brushes under the bottom with out it your vacume is usless on carpet.

broken vacuum cleaner?
I just bought a brand new vacuum today!!! It is much more powerful than my old one, so I did not anticipate it sucking up my bedroom sheets (that has never been a problem before). It still runs, but has lost suction and the brush is not spinning. I called the 800 number and there was no option to speak with someone. Do I have to take my brand new cleaner to the shop, or is this something I can take care of myself?

You are going to have to get the sheet out of there for it to run properly. If you can’t figure it out you will have to take it to a repair shop. Possibility you broke the belt on the brush also.
